My goal as a teacher over the years in and around VT was to provide a safe, approachable and warm space for you thrive, learn, heal, feel welcome, and most importantly, to simply exist. In these hectic times everyday life and stresses can be overwhelming, and your persistence in coming to class and honoring yourself, making space in your day to commit to your wellbeing has been a joy to be apart of.
I am grateful for the opportunities and encouragement that Piper has given me over the years as well as the guidance to learn and grow to be a great teacher. I originally stumbled upon BY in the old location at St. Paul then moved with it to Memorial Auditorium before coming here to College Street. In the summer of 2009 Piper asked me to teach, and I couldn't refuse the offer. Although terrified, the thought had never crossed my mind, I said Yes! I started teaching and people showed up, who knew! Life is short and I figured well, what the hell you have to give things a try even of you never pictured them possible. Honestly, growing up I never even liked yoga...truly! But a therapist in my early years at UVM suggested I take yoga and meditation. Initially I thought, boring! But after the 3rd class at Burlington Yoga with my first instructor, Livia Shapiro, I felt something new and mysterious. Since that flame was lit I have never stopped diving into my curiosity about yoga and its teachings, which I am convinced would take lifetimes of study to ever fully comprehend.
Life is funny like that. We don't know what it coming for us. When a door will shut or open, or when your heart will whisper to you... When we get out of our own way, magic happens...we must listen; there are lessons to be learned and treasures to be discovered.
At the heart of it, it is YOU that has kept the fuel in my tank. Each and everyone one of you has been a part of my path as an individual, a student and teacher; and you have influenced my soul on a deep, deep level. I thank you so much for everything.
We are beyond blessed in this community to have fantastic yoga, studios, teachers, and most of all you, its people. We are a helpful and healing community, which I am blessed to be a part of. So I urge you to never say Never, love yourself and allow your vibration to take care of everything. It is YOU who shares warmth, love and kindness by simply being who you are.
When we take care of ourselves it is a selfless act in naturally creating a more loving and peaceful world by the emission of our vibration. Be good to yourself and one another. I will miss you but I will be visiting VT when I’m back and hope to see you around town. I will also be leading workshops occasionally at various studios around the area and other parts of the country when I am back in the US, please follow me on Facebook and Instagram and my personal website: Malaikayoga.com
