Curriculum
Technique, Training and Practice
Discover the art and science of teaching and how to deepen your personal practice with analytical training in asana, pranayama, mudra, bandha, mantra, and meditation. Develop a deep understanding of proper, functional alignment, using our felt sense of grounding to establish lines of awareness in the traditional postures. Learn how to correctly transition into and out of each posture from this sense of grounding, and with breath directed movements to cultivate an efficient, fluid and sustainable use of energy.
We will study benefits, modifications, variations and contraindications so you can tailor your own practice and safely lead a group class, specialty groups, or individual sessions. Develop the skills to provide effective verbal cues, hands-on adjustments, and demonstrations to guide your students to deeper levels of awareness and embodied experience.
We will explore the body as a beautiful system of light and energy, and learn how mind, body and breath guide our practice. Part of the work of Yoga is to go beyond the limitation of seeing life as solid forms and concepts, and to begin to see the underlying qualities (Gunas) of our experiences. Through self study and awareness we attune to our own essential nature, and from that place we develop an authentic and unique style of teaching. We allow for ourselves, our students, and all of our relationships to fully integrate, and receive the benefits of the practice of Yoga.
”The techniques of yoga give you the opportunity to capture energy from the outside as well as from the inside, and to use that energy for your personal evolution.” B.K.S. Iyengar
Teaching Methodology/Class Structure
Learn how to construct a complete 60-90 minute class from beginner and all-levels; to more advanced, and specialty classes for specific groups and populations. Through the use of centering and breathing techniques we will develop an entree point for students to begin their practice by feeling the energy in their own body/mind. Flowing into gentle movements and warm-ups we will introduce our students to breath-based motion to set a rhythm and build awareness for the practice. Through an in-depth understanding of traditional asanas, sequencing, progressions, timing, observation, verbal cues, demonstrations, adjustments, modifications, and variations we will effectively design a complete class suitable for all levels. Learn how to address and assess the individual needs of each student, and deliver cues through differentiated instruction that guides each student to perform in accordance with their natural capacity. Explore the use of language and voice for creating the arc, and setting the tone of a class. Learn how to use music and aromatherapy to both ground, inspire, and relax your students. In this section you will learn how to lead a basic relaxation- Shavasana to fully integrate the practice.
Philosophy and Ethics
Traditional yogic texts reveal philosophy through sacred scriptures, epic poems and religious dialogues. Learn how yogic philosophy and ethical precepts can be woven into our daily lives and relationships. As we learn to realize our fundamental shared Human experience by connecting to the field of dharma (dharmakshetra), we allow our own basic and pure essential nature to arise.
As taught in the Bhagavad Gita, the field of dharma is also called the field of action; this is our life and environment as expressed through our activities of body, speech and mind. In the precept of Gratitude we take nothing for granted, we see and experience the freshness in each moment. Gratitude for what is received is expressed by impeccable action. Our Conduct is the path of our practice as well as the fruit.
In this section we will study ethical precepts in the tantric tradition, Yamas and Niyamas, as well as the California Code of Conduct for Yoga Teachers.
"It is the moment to moment expression of our integration of the Flow of natural presence. We study and practice the view of the dharma to build our inherent wisdom and spontaneous expression of the dharma. The precepts help create the experience of the dharma." Dharma Bodhi
Anatomy and Physiology with Beth Bowen (CPT, RYT 200)
Saturday and Sunday February 20/21, 8:00 am to 12:30 pm
Location: Green Mountain Rehab & Sports Medicine 90 Main Street Burlington, VT
Metered parking at location.
Learn the structure and function of the skeletal, muscular and the nervous systems as they relate to traditional yoga postures using a hands-on experiential approach. The understanding of anatomy is crucial to improve both your teaching and your own yoga practice, as well as to provide a deeper understanding of the how and why for alignment cues in our yoga practice. Participants will learn tools to help correct and heal their own ailments, and improve knowledge in order to effectively deliver verbal cues, hands-on adjustments, and honor specific requests from their students. This course will cover the basics of bones, connective tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, cartilage, and fascia), organs, bodily systems, basic movements of the spine and extremities, and medical terminology. Beth is known for her lighthearted and inspirational style of teaching, engaging with each student and answering questions along the way.
Energetic Anatomy and Physiology
Building on our understanding of functional anatomy and physiology we will explore energetic anatomy and physiology in the subtle body through the systems of Chakras, Bindus (condensation points), Tattwas (5-elements), Marma points (acupressure points), and Nadis (channel system). We will explore the 7 main-line Chakras and their function as transformers of experience and energy; the Pancha Mahabhutas in the tattwa system of the five great elements; and the energetic channels of Ida, Pingala and Shushumna Nadis. Using meditation, visualization, mantra and pranayama we will learn to access the subtle systems of the mind and body. Trainings in this section will include Yoga for anxiety and depression, trauma sensitive yoga, Yoga Nidra, and mindfulness based classes and workshops.
Ayurveda and the 20 Gunas with Dr. Claudia Welch
Sunday January 24, 2021 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm
The 20 gunas, or qualities, of Ayurveda provide a foundation for understanding and describing the world--including food, herbs, substances, emotions, mental states, the dosas of Ayurveda and, indeed anything that exists. They provide language for understanding how to diagnose and treat physical, emotional or mental disequilibrium. In this workshop we will explore each guna, taste its secrets and intricacies and how we might use the gunas to great benefit. We also plan to relate them to the understanding of vata, pitta, and kapha, the three dosas of Ayurveda.
Dr Claudia Welch is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and Ayurveda. She is an Ayurvedic educator and the author of several books including Balance Your Hormones, Balance Your Life: Achieving Optimal Health and Wellness Through Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine and Western Science and, How the Art of Medicine Makes the Science More Effective: Becoming the Medicine We Practice. Dr. Welch lectures internationally on Oriental and Ayurvedic medicine, exploring how ideas in Eastern medicine apply to Women’s Health, and today’s reality in general. She has served on the teaching faculty of The Ayurvedic Institute, Kripalu School of Ayurveda, Southwest Acupuncture College, and Acupractice Seminars.

Satsang with Prem Prakash on the Bhagavad Gita
Sunday March 22, 2021 1:00-3:00 pm
The Bhagavad Gita, “The Song of the Lord,” is the chief devotional text of India. This text is part of the larger epic of Mahabharata, an ancient story that took literary form between the fifth BCE and third century CE. The Gita is the story of Arjuna and Krishna on the field of Kurukshetra. Arjuna experiences a moment of crisis. He loses his will to fight the battle, and has a long discourse with his charioteer Krishna, about duty, action, and renunciation.
The Gita has three major themes: action, knowledge, and love, the three paths to salvation, known as the Karma, Jnana and Bhakti Yogas. These themes will be discussed as they relate to our everyday lives, the nature of the self, the world, and ultimate reality.
Prem Prakash is the author of The Yoga of Spiritual Devotion: A Modern Translation of the Narada Bhakti Sutras, Three Paths of Devotion : Goddess, God, and Guru, Yoga American Style, and Universal Yoga: The Bhagavad Gita for Modern Times.
